The Research Program at Islands High School is directed by Megan Heberle, recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. By integrating college-level research into her high school curriculum, she is able to challenge her students to prepare them for higher-level work. Her background in birds gives her students the unique opportunity to assist in catching and banding birds. Students are expected to design and conduct research projects, analyze the results, and present their project at the annual symposium. The four years spent in this program will require much dedication, but will be very rewarding; students will come out of the program with stronger speaking, writing, and time management skills. This program will allow students to form close friendships with each other and within the community.
